Magazine study shows new mothers' buying habits

A new study from American Baby magazine shows the buying habits of young mothers are transformed after the birth of her first child.

"Women who have gone through this rite of passage told us that initially they felt excited, but also overwhelmed. We saw how over time, they went through a powerful transformation," says Norma Blatton, publisher of American Baby.

The study found nearly half (48%) purchased or leased a new vehicle in the last 12 months or plan to in the next 12 months, and one in two (54%) respondents said they would be likely to test drive a new kind of vehicle specifically designed for this time in life.

Two-out-of-three (65%) said they are actively making home safety improvements.

The study also found first-time new and expectant moms become very focused on their homes, preferring owning versus renting. Home entertainment, home design and preserving memories become priorities. According to the study:

Nearly half (46%) of first time new moms agree strongly that one-stop shopping is important to them, and 59% have changed to a quicker or easier beauty routine.

The research project includes the responses of nearly 9,000 women, who were between the ages of 18 and 34.
