Organize Magazine

New magazine helps readers sort out their lives

By Andrea Weinfurt

Joyce Dorny was starting her own professional organization business last fall and needed some advice. The mother of six knew how to make her family’s life run smoothly but she wanted another resource for her new business. But when she looked on newsstands for a magazine about organization, she realized there wasn’t one out there.

So she had an idea: she’d start her own.

Organize Magazine launched this month as the only publication completely dedicated to helping people sort out the clutter in their lives. The bi-monthly magazine aims to help readers put their home, work and leisure lives in order.

Dorny serves as the editor in chief and said home magazines such as Martha Stewart Living and Real Simple only include one organization-focused article an issue.

“We are the only magazine out there that is only about organization,” she said.

Stories in Organize cover a wide range of topics to help readers put their lives in order. Dorny would like to hear about “great products, doable projects, the emotional side and the humorous part” of coordinating personal space.

While the magazine is still in its infancy, Dorny knows the kinds of stories that will appeal to readers looking for ways to manage their lives. She is particularly interested in covering small space transformations, real-life examples of how organizational challenges were solved and how entire rooms have been organized. She also wants to hear about seasonally appropriate organization such as back-to-school ideas, spring cleaning tips, summer travel organization and holiday ideas.

But the magazine intends to go beyond just home organization. It will venture into ideas for sorting out personal time, including work and leisure, and will also cover the psychology behind organization, such as the reasons behind cluttered living and the emotional side of letting go of “stuff.”

Making the pitch

Dorny said she’s in a unique position in that she hasn’t received too many pitches yet, so she is open to almost all organization-related story ideas. Coverage includes how-to, emotional, humorous and product stories with organizational angles. So far she’s received information from companies like 3M for product coverage.

Send managing editor Sara MacLean general editorial inquiries, while product stories can be sent to Dorny herself. For items to be considered for the Neat Things We Like section, material should be sent to Amy Mowbray.
