Spry

By Andrea Weinfurt

Health junkies will have a new place to get their fix when Spry magazine bounds into newspapers in September.

The magazine’s mission is to share the joy, power and rewards of healthy living. With a circulation of approximately 9 million the publication provides information and advice for how to live a healthy lifestyle, as well as content on food, beauty, travel, recreation and leisure activities, entertainment and shopping. It is released monthly and is distributed within weekly and daily newspapers nationwide.

The owners of Spry, the Publishing Group of America, also produce American Profile, a weekly covering hometown American life, and Relish, a monthly celebrating the wide breadth of America's love of food.

Editor Lisa Delaney says, “Our network of newspaper publishers around the country identified health and wellness as a topic of great interest to their readers, which led us to create Spry.”

Women between the ages of 35 and 64 are the target audience for Spry, says Delaney. Topics of particular interest include nutrition, weight loss, everyday health issues, health travel, personal profiles, personal finance and pets.

A veteran of health-focused publications such as Health and Cooking Light, Delaney is also the author of Secrets of a Former Fat Girl. She has also worked for Prevention magazine and written for Vogue, Men's Health, Men's Journal and Reader's Digest.

Coupled with Spry’s launch is the introduction of a new weekly blog, The Spry Life, which covers similar topics to the magazine. Posts include information on making daily choices to promote healthy living and how to avoid unhealthy life choices.

Making the Pitch

Delaney is interested in receiving pitches from PR professionals and is open to most information. When asked what kinds of stories the magazine avoids, she “can’t think of anything.” The best way to contact Delaney is via e-mail.
