US Airways magazine
New, 200-page magazine gives airline passengers something to do on a long flight
Passengers aboard US Airways will soon have a new distraction on flights. Arising from the merger of US Airways and America West is the new inflight magazine US Airways, set to debut in January. Replacing Attache, which ended an 8-year run in November, the new publication will be more focused on lifestyle, fashion, pop culture and travel.
Editor Lance Elko said US Airways stands apart from its competitors because of its extensive and more comprehensive travel coverage. At over 200 pages, it also stands out in size.
Elko hopes to attract readers with offbeat stories. “We include a lot of ‘who knew?’ content in addition to stories about pop culture and lifestyle,” he said. US Airways will also offer three puzzles, which are passenger favorites on long flights.
The first issue includes the following articles: Top Ten Tastes of the Year, by food guru John T. Edge; Parrot Cay: The Ultimate Caribbean Getaway; Alter Ego: The Other Side of Geena Davis; The Biggest Upsets in Super Bowl History; and Straight Talk: Advice on How to Dress from Mark Gill.
US Airways bills itself as the country’s first low-cost, full-service, nationwide airline. It services over 200 cities across the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe. Hubs are located in Phoenix; Las Vegas; Charlotte, N.C.; and Philadelphia. The airline averages 5.8 million passengers per month.
In Every Issue
All Over the Map – Shorts on destinations and events
In the Hub – News from Philadelphia, Phoenix, Charlotte, Las Vegas and Pittsburgh
Alter Ego – A short piece on the flip side of photography
Get Personal – Fashion, accessories and travel-friendly wear and tips
In Gear – Travel items of all kinds
Get Smart – Advice for travelers on books, Web sites and more
Pitching Tips
Elko said the regular departments are pitchable and the magazine uses “a fair number of freelancers.” Since there is no single submissions editor, Elko suggests sending all submissions by mail to the editorial staff.
