International Herald Tribune appoints global editor

Iht William Schmidt, 212-556-1211, an assistant managing editor at The New York Times, will join the International Herald Tribune in Paris as the global editor by the end of December 2008. He will replace interim editor Martin Gottlieb, who will return to New York at the same time. Schmidt was named to his current position in July 2005 after serving as an associate managing editor since 2003. He joined the paper in 1981 and has held a variety of other positions including deputy national editor, London correspondent, and national correspondent. Atlanta Journal-Constitution to cut staff, sections

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has announced that it will reduce its staff by about 8%, or 189 jobs, through buyouts, layoffs and position eliminations between August and October. These cuts will include 85 newsroom positions. As an additional cost-cutting measure, it will cease publishing all of its zoned inserts and the Better Health and Buyer's Edge sections, effective in August. The community news will be covered within the main metro and sports pages, while Better Health and Buyer's Edge will be folded into expanded Wednesday and Sunday Living sections. Phil Griffin has been named president of MSNBC/Microsoft-NBC. In this role, he will oversee day-to-day operations in addition to handling Specials coverage at NBC News.  Griffin was most recently senior vice president at NBC News, a position he took over in April 2005. LA Times to cut staff, pages

Los_angeles_times_2The Los Angeles Times has announced it will cut 250 positions, including 150 in the newsroom, as well as reduce the number of pages it prints each week by approximately 15 percent.  As part of the restructuring, the print and Web staffs will become one unit with a shared budget. Bob Gremillion was recently named acting publisher of the Chicago Tribune and RedEye, effective today. He will also continue to serve as executive vice president of the Tribune Company's publishing group, a position he has held since May 2007. Publisher announces retirement from The Courier-Journal

Denise Ivey, 502-582-4101, recently announced her retirement from The Courier-Journal and Velocity in Kentucky, effective Jan. 1, 2009. She was named publisher and president in January 2006 and previously served as the publisher of the Pensacola (Fla.) News Journal for nearly 15 years.
